Summer in China: Practical Guide to Staying Cool, the Rainy Season, and Heat Prevention

Summer in China is half scorching and half cool. This article explains where to go and where to avoid, the actual impact of the rainy season, and specific methods for heat and sun protection.

China in Summer: Three Climate Zones

  • Extremely Hot Zone (35—45°C): Yangtze River Basin (Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing, Hangzhou), North China Plain, Turpan (surface temperature can reach 70°C).
  • Cool Zone (15—25°C): Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (Kunming, Guiyang, Liupanshui), Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Inner Mongolian grasslands, Northeast China, Western Sichuan Plateau, Chengde.
  • Hot and Humid Zone (28—35°C, high humidity): South China, Fujian, Hainan, Jiangnan after the plum rain.

Top Summer Escapes

  • Guizhou: Average summer temperature 23°C. Attractions include Huangguoshu Waterfall, Libo, Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, Fanjing Mountain. China's number one summer resort province.
  • Yunnan: Kunming 20°C, Dali and Lijiang 18—24°C, Shangri-La even cooler.
  • Hulunbuir and Xilingol: Grasslands 20—25°C in summer, July to August is the most beautiful period.
  • Qinghai and Gannan: Rapeseed blossom in July, daytime around 20°C, large temperature difference between day and night.
  • Chengde Summer Resort: The Qing Dynasty royal summer logic still holds today.
  • Northeast China: Harbin around 25°C in summer, a high cost-performance option for the holiday period.

Rainy Season and Typhoons

  • Jiangnan Plum Rain (mid-June to mid-July): Continuous cloudy rain, very high humidity. Plans should include indoor backup options.
  • North China Rainy Season (late July to early August): Short intense rains that may affect mountain trips.
  • South China Typhoon (July—September): Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan will be affected, flights and boat schedules may be canceled, plans need to remain flexible.
  • Southwest Rainy Season (June—August): Mountain roads in Western Sichuan and Yunnan may collapse due to rain, car rentals should follow the driver’s judgment.

Travel principle during rainy season: Do not rent cars to enter mountainous areas, do not schedule must-see sunrise or sunset spots; include cities and indoor attractions (museums, grottoes, old towns) instead.

Heat and Sun Protection

  • Time Management: 11:00—15:00 is the hottest period, use it for meals, rest, or visiting indoor places.
  • Hydration: The summer in China causes heavy sweating, drink 2—3 liters of water daily. Electrolyte drinks (Pocari Sweat, Gatorade) are widely available.
  • Sun Protection: UV rays are extremely strong on the plateau and in the northwest. Use SPF50 sunscreen, hats, and arm sleeves. Sunscreen is necessary even on cloudy days.
  • Heat Stroke Identification: Dizziness, nausea, cessation of sweating, hot skin—go to a shaded area, hydrate, and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Huoxiang Zhengqi Water: A commonly used Chinese patent medicine, effective for mild heat stroke and gastrointestinal discomfort, costs a few yuan per box at pharmacies (strong taste, available with alcohol and alcohol-free versions).

Special Reminders for Summer Crowds

  • Prices Double at Family Destinations: Sanya, islands, Zhangjiajie, and the grasslands have summer prices 1.5—2 times higher than the rest of the year.
  • Many Students and Family Groups: Places like the Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors, and Mogao Caves are busiest in July and August due to popular study tours.
  • Avoid Mid-July to Mid-August: These four weeks are the national summer peak. Late June and late August are significantly better.
