The

most moving aspect of Kaifeng is its "layering": today's city is built over Northern Song Dynasty Bianjing, the Yellow River's breach has buried several layers, and the iron tower and Fan Pagoda are among the few Song Dynasty artifacts still standing in place. Although Qingming Riverside Garden is a restoration, it recreates the Rainbow Bridge, Bian River boats, and street vendors from "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," making it more intuitive for Chinese people wanting to understand Song Dynasty life than any museum.
