Ice and Snow Season

There are two types of winters in China: in the south it is damp and cold, while in the north there is real snow. From December to February, the Snow Town in Northeast China and Harbin form a winter-only route.

How Snow Mushrooms Form

The "snow mushrooms" in Snow Town (Shuangfeng Forest Farm) are shapes formed by snow accumulating on wooden fences and eaves. This occurs due to the region's unique snow quality and wind direction — sticky snow and gentle winds, layering and thickening on the wood. Paired with red lanterns after dark, it is the most photogenic scene of winter in the Northeast. They usually only form completely by late December.

The Ice in Harbin

The giant ice structures in the Ice and Snow World are embedded with light strips that all illuminate after dark. The park is huge, and it is coldest after 21:00, so proper warmth precautions are necessary. The cobblestones of Central Street and Saint Sophia Cathedral are two prominent city landmarks.

Keeping Warm Is a Technical Issue

• Layered clothing: moisture-wicking base layer, warm middle layer, windproof outer layer. Do not wear cotton base layers, as sweat will freeze.
• Snow boots (slip-resistant and waterproof), crampons, face protection, gloves, hat.
• Heating pads in pockets can help keep your phone warm; electronic devices lose power very quickly in low temperatures.

Skiing

Yabuli is one of the most developed ski resorts in the Northeast, with snow equipment and beginner slopes included. Beginners should definitely consult a coach and ski within their ability.
