West Lake is not a single attraction, but a visual system that has been observed for over a thousand years. Scholars throughout history arranged the embankments, pagodas, islands, and temples according to "distance, season, and weather," so the same body of water appears differently in sunshine, rain, fog, and snow. The biggest mistake when visiting Hangzhou is simply "walking around the lake to check in," which will only let you see crowds of people.

Core Highlights

How to Walk Around the Lake

Su Causeway is best for a slow walk in the early morning or evening, with alternating peach blossoms and willows, and is about 2.8 km long; Bai Causeway is shorter, connecting Broken Bridge and Solitary Hill; the north side of Beishan Street features old villas and temples, while the south side has Leifeng Pagoda and Jingci Temple. For classic photo compositions, visit the opposite side at Changqiao Park or Huagang Park to watch the fish.

Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak

The stone carvings at Feilai Peak date from the Five Dynasties to the Song Dynasty. It's better to see the carvings before entering the temple for a smoother experience. Lingyin Temple is a large complex, progressing from the Hall of Heavenly Kings to the Mahavira Hall. Crowds peak in the morning, while afternoons are quieter. The nearby Yongfu Temple and Taoguang Temple have fewer people and higher locations, offering better views.

Longjing Village and Tea Culture

The Longjing area is filled with hilly tea plantations, and the village is built along the hillside. The period around Qingming Festival marks the peak of tea harvesting, with the highest prices and crowds. Having a tea at a tea farmer's home and watching the tea-frying process is more reliable than buying tea in the city.

Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

The area around Gongchen Bridge preserves industrial and urban relics along the canal. The historic district west of the bridge is great for evening walks. It represents a completely different side of Hangzhou compared to West Lake.

Suggested Stay and Itinerary

  • 2 days: One full day around the lake, half a day at Lingyin Temple, half a day at Longjing Village.
  • 3 days: Add the canal district and Xixi Wetland, or extend to Wuzhen and Suzhou.
  • "Shanghai—Hangzhou—Wuzhen—Suzhou" is the most common Jiangnan route for Chinese travelers, conveniently connected by high-speed rail.

Best Seasons

March to May (peach blossoms, willows, Longjing tea) and September to November (osmanthus, autumn scenery). June to July is hot and humid with plum rains; July to August is very hot; December to February is wet and cold, but the Broken Bridge after snow offers a rare, picturesque view of West Lake.

Local Tips

  • West Lake is extremely crowded during holidays, so avoid peak times; early morning is the best time.
  • There are sightseeing buses and cruise boats around the lake, so those with limited stamina can take them in segments.
  • When buying tea in Longjing, be sure to check its origin and sales channels, and be cautious with roadside sellers.
  • Subway access covers major city attractions, while taxis can be blocked during peak hours.
