Yangzhou Travel Guide

Slender West Lake · Ge Garden · Dongguan Street · Morning Tea

Yangzhou is the hometown of Huaiyang cuisine, and it is also a city that excels at breakfast: the long dike and spring willows of Slender West Lake, the four-season artificial hills of Ge Garden, and the old shops on Dongguan Street. In the morning, first go to Fuchun or Yechun to eat a basket of San Ding buns. Two days are the most suitable.

"Fireworks in March go down to Yangzhou" is the most familiar line of Tang poetry among Chinese people, and Yangzhou indeed lives up to this description: in March, the jade-colored flowers bloom and willow catkins drift, and the water and bridges of the Slender West Lake create the most typical Jiangnan scenery of China. It is also the center of Huaiyang cuisine—Wensi tofu, braised dried bean curd threads, Lion's Head meatballs, focusing on knife skills and natural flavor, almost never a disappointment for Chinese who are used to light-flavored food.

Key Highlights

Slender West Lake

A long, narrow waterway connects the Five Pavilion Bridge, White Pagoda, and Twenty-Four Bridges, representing the master gardens created by Qing Dynasty salt merchants.

Ge Garden

Famous for bamboo and seasonal rockeries, this garden uses different stones to create mountain landscapes for spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

He Garden

The late Qing "Jixiao Villa" is surrounded by double-layered corridors, called the earliest model of a grade-separated interchange in China.

Dongguan Street

The most complete historic street in Yangzhou, featuring Xie Fuchun fragrant powders, Sumei pickles, and beef leather candy all along the street.

Daming Temple

The temple where Monk Jianzhen stayed before traveling east, with the Qiling Pagoda offering views over Slender West Lake and the old city.

Local Tips

  • Morning tea is a serious matter in Yangzhou; Fuchun, Yechun, and Pibaoshui start queues at seven in the morning.
  • Combined tickets for Slender West Lake and Ge Garden are more cost-effective, with about a ten-minute walk between them.
  • Yangzhou has no subway, mainly relying on buses and taxis; don't spread your itinerary too thin.
