The appeal of Chengdu is hard to explain with a list of attractions. Its core competitiveness lies in its 'sense of life': teahouses, hotpot, ear-cleaning, people playing chess in the park, plus the most adorable animal in the world. Most people come to Chengdu as a gateway to enter and exit Sichuan, but what truly leaves an impression is often those two days in the city.
Key Highlights
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Be sure to arrive early. Pandas are most active in the cooler morning hours, and entering the park around 9 AM allows you to see them eating and moving around; after noon, they spend most of their time sleeping, and you’ll only see balls of fur. The park is large, and the cubs in the Moonlight Nursery are the most popular, so be prepared to line up. Please remain quiet and do not use flash photography.
Kuanzhai Alley
Consisting of three Qing Dynasty streets: Wide Alley, Narrow Alley, and Well Alley, it is Chengdu’s most famous street area and also the most crowded. If you want to appreciate the texture of buildings and courtyards, go in the morning; if you want to enjoy the atmosphere, go at night. Nearby streets like Kuixinglou Street and Pao Tongshu Street are more local, with a high density of restaurants.
Wuhou Shrine and Jinli
Wuhou Shrine is the only temple in China where both ruler and minister are enshrined, and the garden area is very quiet. Adjacent Jinli is a replica ancient commercial street, which looks beautiful at night with lanterns lit but is quite commercialized—just stroll casually.
People’s Park and Sichuan Cuisine
Heming Teahouse is a living example of Chengdu’s teahouse culture: bamboo chairs, lidded cup tea, ear-cleaning services—sitting there for an afternoon is very rewarding. For food, hotpot, skewers, maocai, twice-cooked pork, and mapo tofu each have their own style; if you can’t handle spicy food, you can preemptively request 'mild' or 'no spice'.
Recommended Stay and Itinerary
2 Days: Half day at the Panda Base Kuanzhai Alley Wuhou Shrine and Jinli People’s Park.
3 Days: Add a day trip to Dujiangyan or Mount Qingcheng.
As a transit hub: fly to Chengdu for a day to acclimate, then proceed to Jiuzhaigou or follow the land route circuit.
Best Seasons
March to June and September to November are most comfortable. July and August are hot and humid; winter is cold, overcast, with little sunlight but fewer tourists, and hotpot is perfect for the season. Pandas can be seen year-round, regardless of the weather.
Local Tips
The Panda Base must be booked online with real-name registration; tickets sell out quickly during peak season.
Hotpot dipping sauces and spice levels can be adjusted, so those with sensitive stomachs should start gradually.
City attractions are concentrated, and the metro and shared bicycles are sufficient. To go to Jiuzhaigou, you can choose a flight (time-saving) or travel by land (scenery along the way), each has its trade-offs.
