Beihai is often compared to Sanya, but its prices are only half of Sanya's, and it is much less crowded. Silver Beach is suitable for bringing elders and children—gentle slope, small waves, fine sand; Weizhou Island is worth staying an extra couple of days, with volcanic rocks, churches, and fishing villages creating a completely different rhythm. It is also the ending of Guangxi's border route: from Guilin and Yangshuo down south to Beihai, experiencing landscapes from mountains to the sea along the way.

Key Highlights

Beihai Silver Beach

The beach is 24 km long, with fine white quartz sand. At low tide, you can walk out very far.

Weizhou Island

The youngest volcanic island in China, the coastal erosion landforms of Crocodile Hill and the sunrise at Five-Colored Beach are the two main highlights.

Zhuhai Road Old Street

A 1.4 km long arcade street, with shop fronts from the late Qing and early Republic periods still displaying bilingual signs in Chinese and English.

Jinhai Bay Mangrove Forest

The mangrove wetland on the peninsula, where at low tide you can go exploring for fiddler crabs and mudskippers.

Beibu Gulf Square

The city center's public square, with night seafood stalls concentrated on the surrounding streets.

Suggested Stay and Route

  • Recommended stay: 3–4 days.
  • It is more efficient to combine with other destinations in the same area. See the “Extendable Routes” and “Province” sections below for reference.

Local Tips

  • Weizhou Island boat tickets should be booked 3–5 days in advance during peak season, and service will be suspended during typhoon season.
  • For seafood, it is recommended to buy from the market and then have it processed at a shop, which is half the price of tourist restaurants.
  • Silver Beach is exposed to strong sun during the day; after 5 PM is the most comfortable time to swim.
