Destination Details
Fuzhou holds special significance for overseas Chinese—it is the ancestral home of many Southeast Asian Chinese, and its language (Eastern Min) and cuisine can still be heard and tasted in Chinese communities in Malaysia and Indonesia. Figures like Lin Zexu, Yan Fu, and Lin Juemin, who came from the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, represent half of modern history, while Fujian cuisine tends to be sweet and sour and emphasizes rich broths, with Buddha Jumps Over the Wall being the pinnacle of this culinary approach.
Key Highlights
Three Lanes and Seven Alleys
The largest historical neighborhood with the existing block-and-alley layout in China, home to the former residences of Lin Zexu, Yan Fu, and Bing Xin.
Gushan (Drum Mountain)
Fuzhou's symbolic mountain, with Yongquan Temple and over 200 cliff inscriptions lining the stone steps all the way to the top.
Shangxiahang
An old commercial port along the Min River; modern-era shops and guild halls have been converted into restaurants and bookstores.
Min River Night Cruise
Starting from Taijiang Wharf, the cruise features the illuminated riverbanks and the Jiefang Bridge as Fuzhou's main nighttime scenery.
Fuzhou West Lake
Much smaller than Hangzhou's West Lake, but the layout of Kaihua Temple and Wanzaingtang is a typical example of Fujian-style gardens.
