Xishuangbanna is the only tropical rainforest region in China: the Starlight Night Market at Gozhuang Xishuangjing, the Asian elephants in Wild Elephant Valley, the canopy walkway of the sky trees at Wangtianshu, and the Dai ethnic villages. The most comfortable time is in winter, for four to six days.

Xishuangbanna is the part of China that feels the least like China: palm trees, flamboyant flowers, Dai-style stilted houses, and tropical fruits, with language and cuisine carrying clear Southeast Asian influences. For Chinese elders who dislike the cold, this is the most comfortable place to return to in winter.

Local Tips

  • During the rainy season (May–October), the experiences at Wangtian Tree and Wild Elephant Valley may be discounted, so it’s best to visit in the dry season.
  • During the Water-Splashing Festival (mid-April), accommodations are tight, but it’s also the most atmospheric time.
  • Lots of mosquitoes – long sleeves and insect repellent are essential.
