Jiuhua Mountain Travel Guide

Jiuhua Street · Baishou Palace · Tiantai Peak · Huacheng Temple

Mount Jiuhua is the sanctuary of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva: the cluster of temples on Jiuhua Street, the incorrupt body of Master Wuxia at Baisuigong, the sea of clouds at Tiantai Peak; a two to three-day visit is common, often combined with Huangshan for six days.

Mount Jiuhua is the most "earthly" of China's four famous Buddhist mountains: on Jiuhua Street there are schools, post offices, and vegetable markets, and monks live together with local residents. It is only a two-hour drive from Huangshan, so itineraries in Huizhou often combine “sightseeing the mountain first, then entering the temple.”

Main Highlights

Jiuhua Street

The plateau at an elevation of 600 meters with temples and residential settlements serves as the living center of Mount Jiuhua.

Baishou Palace

A five-story temple built on a cliff, housing the incorruptible body of Master Wuxia as a Bodhisattva.

Tiantai Peak

The highest point of Mount Jiuhua, at an elevation of 1306 meters, offering views of the sea of clouds and sunrise.

Huacheng Temple

The founding temple of Mount Jiuhua, now serving as the Mount Jiuhua Historical and Cultural Museum.

Suggested Duration and Routes

  • Recommended stay: 2–3 days.
  • It is more efficient to link it with other nearby destinations; see the sections below “Extended Routes” and “Province” for reference.

Local Tips

  • You can take the cable car to Tiantai Peak and then climb the remaining 800 steps; even those with average fitness can reach the top.
  • The mountain is often rainy and foggy; raincoats are more practical than umbrellas.
  • When combining with Huangshan, plan to enter Huangshan first and exit via Mount Jiuhua to avoid backtracking.
