Xiamen Travel Guide
Gulangyu · Nanjing Tulou · Island Ring Road · Minnan Culture
Xiamen's temperament is a mix of the ocean and overseas Chinese hometowns: the old villas of Gulangyu, the tulou clusters of Nanjing, and the sea breeze along Huandao Road. This site organizes the reservations and time slots for Gulangyu and the round-trip arrangements for the tulou.

Destination Details
Xiamen is the ancestral home gateway for many overseas Chinese, with Minnan dialect, arcade buildings, and overseas Chinese architecture creating an atmosphere that is distinctly different from other coastal cities. It is also a city perfect for leisurely walks: cycling along the island road, old villas on Gulangyu, and vegetable markets in the eight markets, each with its own unique charm
Key highlights
Gulang Islet
A World Cultural Heritage site, the island preserves many villas and churches of overseas Chinese merchants, with a mix of architectural styles (colonial, Art Deco, Minnan traditions). Motor vehicles are prohibited on the island; all must be walking. Ferry real-name reservations are different from the Citizen Pier; be sure to confirm arrival at the pier before departure. Staying overnight allows you to see the island after the tourists have left, completely different from daytime
Nanjing and Yongding earthen towers
Fujian Tulou are large rammed earth buildings where Hakka families live together, with round and square styles. The largest can accommodate several hundred people. The one-way trip from Xiamen takes about 2.5–3 hours, making it suitable for a full day trip. The 'Four Dishes and One Soup' set in Tianluokeng is the most classic set, while the Yunshuiyao Ancient Trail has a unique water town vibe. It's recommended to choose one group for a deeper look rather than rushing to check in at the event
Huandao Road and Xiamen University
Huandao Road is a great place for coastal cycling and walking, with the most pleasant evening. Xiamen University is nestled against the mountains and faces the sea; the campus itself is a tourist attraction (admission must be reserved according to regulations). The nearby Nanputuo Temple is bustling with incense offerings, and you can climb Wulao Peak to view Xiamen University and the sea
Eight Markets and Zhongshan Road
The Eighth Market is a local market, packed with seafood, fruit, and Minnan snacks—it's the best place to experience everyday city life. Zhongshan Road is a arcade-style commercial street, lively at night
Recommended stops and flow routes
- 3 days: Gulangyu for the whole day (including one night preferred), Ring Island Road, Bashi, Nanputuo
- Day 4: One day at Nanjing Tulou
- It connects with Quanzhou and Fuzhou to form the Minnan Line. Quanzhou's Kaiyuan Temple and Old Town are well worth it
The best season
March to May and October to December. Spring is humid but comfortable, autumn and winter have stable weather with fewer tourists. July to September is hot and typhoon season. During the Spring Festival, Gulangyu and Tulou have the largest foot traffic
Local reminder
- Gulangyu ferry tickets are booked with real-name registration and peak seasons are extremely tight, so be sure to book through official channels in advance
- Most tulou are located in mountainous areas with winding roads, so those who get carsick should prepare in advance
- Pay attention to market prices and processing fees for seafood, confirm before buying
- During the typhoon season, pay attention to flight and ferry suspension notices.
