Lijiang Travel Guide
Lijiang Old Town · Jade Dragon Snow Mountain · Shuhe · Lugu Lake
Lijiang is the most familiar Yunnan name to overseas Chinese: the water system of the ancient town, the glacier park of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the tranquility of Shuhe, and the Mosuo culture of Lugu Lake. This site organizes information on coping with altitude sickness, choosing snow mountain cable cars, and avoiding crowds in the ancient town.
This site only handles information compilation and itinerary design; prices and bookings are based on final confirmation.
Destination Details
The brilliance of Lijiang Old Town lies in its water system—water flows from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and after entering the town, it branches into countless streams. Walking along the stone-paved streets, there is flowing water at your feet. This system has been in use for hundreds of years and still serves the residents today. It is a living cultural heritage, not a stage setting.
Key Highlights
Lijiang Old Town
The best time to visit is from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., before tourists arrive and shops open, allowing you to see the town’s own rhythm of life. Sifang Street is the most crowded; walk up towards Lion Hill or the Mu Residence to get better views and fewer crowds. Maintenance fees for the old town and some sightseeing spots are occasionally adjusted, so check the latest announcements before traveling.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
The Glacier Park cableway takes you directly to a viewing platform at about 4,506 meters, making it the most visually striking stop in all of Lijiang. The altitude rises quickly, so it is recommended not to schedule a full day the day before. Take your time walking, and bring a windproof jacket. The cableway may be closed during strong winds, so always have a backup plan. The water color of Blue Moon Valley changes with the weather and lighting, and it looks best on sunny days.
Shuhe Ancient Town
Smaller and quieter than Dayan Old Town, the bluestone pavements retain a shine from constant water exposure. It is best visited in the afternoon; find a courtyard to sit and have tea, letting your pace slow down.
Lugu Lake
It is a long drive from Lijiang (mountain roads, usually over 4 hours), but worth staying overnight. The lake is expansive, and the Mosuo people's walking marriage and matriarchal family structures are genuine cultural experiences, not performances. Cycling around the lake or riding a dugout boat are both great, with the light in early morning and late afternoon being the most beautiful.
Recommended Duration and Routes
- 3 days: Old Town, Shuhe, and a one-day trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
- 5 days: add two days and one night at Lugu Lake, or a one-day trek to Tiger Leaping Gorge.
- Schedule the snow mountain visit after the second day (to acclimate to the altitude), not on the day of arrival.
Best Seasons
March to May and September to November. June to August is the rainy season, with the mountain often obscured by clouds, but it is also peak season for escaping the heat and busy with tourists. December to February is the dry season, offering the best visibility, the lowest snow line, and the most stable time to see the snow mountain, though temperature differences between day and night are extreme.
Local Tips
- Altitude sickness varies by person: on the first day, do not take long baths, consume alcohol, or engage in strenuous activity.
- UV rays are very strong; sunscreen and sunglasses are essential, not optional.
- The stone-paved streets of the old town can be slippery; suitcases with large wheels are recommended.
- For chartered cars and day tours, please confirm whether shopping stops are included, as there are often solicitors around the old town.
