Getting aroundIt takes 20 minutes by bus between the villa and the Outer Eight Temples, and you can take a taxi.

The formation of Chengde was entirely political: Kangxi chose this valley to build the Rehe Imperial Palace in order to receive Mongolian and Tibetan princes, which is why the Outer Eight Temples feature replicas of the Potala Palace and Tashilhunpo Monastery. For Chinese travelers, this offers a rare perspective—how the Qing Dynasty governed a multi-ethnic empire using four languages: Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan. The architecture itself is the answer.

Main Highlights

Mountain Resort

The palace where Qing emperors spent summers and managed state affairs. The lake area imitates the Jiangnan region, the plains resemble grasslands, and the mountains cover four-fifths of the area.

Puning Temple

The most famous of the Outer Eight Temples. Inside the Mahayana Pavilion is a 22-meter-tall wooden statue of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara.

Putuo Zongcheng Temple

Built to imitate the Potala Palace in Lhasa, it is the largest of the Outer Eight Temples, commonly known as the "Little Potala Palace."

Qingchui Peak

A natural stone pillar standing at the mountain top. Bangchui Mountain is a landmark of Chengde's geography, accessible by cable car.

Jinshanling Great Wall

Located at the border of Chengde and Beijing, this section is widely recognized by photographers as the best-preserved and most scenic.
