Guilin Li River Travel Guide
Lijiang · Yangshuo · Longji Terraces · Karst
The karst landscape of Guilin is one of the most easily recognizable Chinese scenery for overseas Chinese. This site organizes the differences between Li River cruises and bamboo rafts, the stay arrangements in Yangshuo, and the irrigation and harvesting seasons of the Longji Terraces.

Destination Details
Guilin's mountains are not continuous ranges but solitary peaks rising from the flat ground. Such landforms are rare worldwide, and paired with rivers and rice fields, it becomes the quintessential Chinese landscape. What many people don't know is: whether Guilin is beautiful or not almost entirely depends on which section you choose and what season you visit
Key highlights
Li River: Boat or bamboo raft
The boatfrom Guilin to Yangshuo takes the full waterway, offering wide views and meals, suitable for elders; The bamboo raft from Yangdi to Xingping is the highlight section—agile, close to the water, and better for photos. The two are not substitutes—if you want to see the whole picture, take the boat; if you want to see the details, take the raft. The 20 RMB back is at Xingping, accessible on foot or by small raft
Yangshuo and the Ten-Mile Gallery
Yangshuo is suitable for staying one to two nights; don't make a day trip. Ride a bicycle or electric bike through the Ten-Mile Gallery, passing Moon Mountain, Big Banyan Tree, and Butterfly Spring. Bamboo rafts on the Yulong River are quieter than those on the Li River, made by hand and without noise, making it the highest-rated section for many visitors. West Street is lively at night but highly commercialized. For accommodation, it's recommended to stay in guesthouses outside the county town or along the Yulong River
Longji Terraces
Longji is the most challenging seasonal stop on Guilin's itinerary. During the irrigation season in May and June, the terraced fields reflect like mirrors; July and August are green waves of rice; September and October are golden before harvest; After November, only the ridges of the fields remain, greatly reducing their ornamental value. There are guesthouses in the village, and you can only see the morning light after staying one night
Guilin urban area
Elephant Trunk Hill is a landmark, the lighting for the Two Rivers and Four Lakes night tour is nice, and Ludi Rock is a typical karst cave. A one-night stay in the city is enough; the focus should be on Yangshuo and Longji
Recommended stops and flow routes
- Day 4: Guilin 1 night → Lijiang → Yangshuo 2 nights (Yulong River Ten-Mile Gallery) → return
- Day 5: Overnight at the Longji Terraces, then descend after inspecting the fields in the morning The
- terraces and Lijiang River are both along the Longsheng–Yangshuo line; if arranged in order, you can avoid regressing
The best season
April to October is generally suitable. May and June bring more rain, but the terraces are flooded at their most beautiful and also have the highest water levels in the Li River; July and August are hot and rainy season, possibly due to boat route changes; September and October are the most stable and golden terraces, making it the highest-rated window overall
Local reminder
- Bamboo rafting and drifting are affected by water levels and may be suspended after heavy rain, so it's important to have a backup plan for your itinerary.
- When cycling at the Ten-Mile Gallery, watch out for motor vehicles; if bringing children, it is recommended to choose electric bikes or chartered vehicles.
- Most terraced villages are on mountains, and the roads are slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes.
- Beer fish and Lipu taro braised pork are local specialties, with noticeable price differences inside and outside scenic areas.
