Getting aroundThere is a tourist shuttle between scenic spots, and it takes about 20 minutes from Shaolin Temple to Songyang Academy.

Shaolin Temple is probably one of the Chinese cultural symbols most familiar to overseas Chinese and foreigners alike: Zen and martial arts have been passed down together in the same courtyard for 1,500 years, and the Pagoda Forest has recorded the names of successive abbots in stone chronicles. The advantage of Dengfeng is its density—Shaolin Temple, Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, and the Astronomical Observatory are all within a half-hour drive, allowing you to visit four national key cultural relics in one day.

Main Highlights

Shaolin Temple Residential Courtyard

Built by Batuo in the Northern Wei dynasty, it is the ancestral seat of Zen Buddhism. The Ming dynasty murals of 500 Arhats and the foot pits for martial arts practice are inside the Thousand Buddha Hall.

Pagoda Forest

A group of tomb pagodas for the high monks of Shaolin Temple, with more than 240 pagodas remaining today, it is the largest pagoda forest in China.

Songyang Academy

One of the four great academies of the Song dynasty, inside the academy are two cypress trees from the Han dynasty general with an age of over 4,500 years.

Zhongyue Temple

The largest Taoist temple among the Five Sacred Mountains, the central axis is 650 meters long, serving as a complete example of the sacrificial ceremonies of Mount Song.

Astronomical Observatory

Built by Guo Shoujing in the Yuan dynasty, it is one of the oldest existing astronomical buildings in China.
