Wuzhen Travel Guide
East Gate · West Gate · Water Town Night Scenery · Riverside Homes
Wuzhen is one of the most well-preserved towns in the water towns of Jiangnan: East Gate shows daily life, West Gate shows the night scenery. This site organizes the choices between the East and West Gates, the necessity of staying for one night, and the best time for photography.
This site only handles information compilation and itinerary design; prices and bookings are based on final confirmation.
Destination Details
The essence of the water town lies in the "relationship between water and houses": houses are built along the river, with the street at the front door and the river at the back door. Washing clothes, buying groceries, and transporting goods are all done on the water. Wuzhen has preserved this arrangement and turned it into a fully managed tourist area—this is both its advantage (clean, safe, good night view) and its controversy (commercialization).
Main Highlights
West Scenic Area: Only Meaningful If You Stay Overnight
The essence of the West Scenic Area is the night view and early morning. During the day, tourists flood in from all directions, and by evening, most of them leave. Only those staying in the scenic area get a chance to see lanterns reflected on the water, and empty stone-paved streets. From 6 to 8 a.m. is the second golden period, with light mist, cooking smoke, and rowing boats. If you miss these two time periods, Wuzhen is only worth half as much.
East Scenic Area: Observe Everyday Life
The East Scenic Area preserves more scenes of local residents' daily life. It is smaller and less commercialized. There are small venues such as dye workshops, shadow puppet theaters, and wood carving studios. A combined ticket with West Scenic Area is usually more cost-effective, and it is feasible to visit both areas in one day.
Rowing Boats
Manual rowing wooden boats are the water town experience most worth spending money on. The boats move slowly and quietly, allowing a close view of both riverbanks. Night trips are especially beautiful, but this depends on the weather and water levels.
Surroundings and Festivals
The Wuzhen Theatre Festival (usually in autumn) is a highly regarded theatrical event in China. During this time, accommodations are tight and tickets are scarce, but the atmosphere is at its best. If time permits, you can also visit Xitang or Nanxun for comparison.
Recommended Stay and Route
- 1 day: Arrive at the West Scenic Area in the afternoon → sunset → night view → stay inside the scenic area.
- 2 days: Day one, East Scenic Area → West Scenic Area night view; Day two, take another early morning tour of West Scenic Area before leaving.
- Accommodations inside the scenic area are managed by the authorities, so booking in advance is essential during peak season.
Best Seasons
March to May and September to November. In spring, the misty rain gives the most "Jiangnan" feel. In autumn, the sky is clear and refreshing, and night views are crisp. Summer is hot and buggy; winter has fewer tourists, clear water town lines, and snow scenes are a rare bonus.
Local Tips
- Only by staying inside the scenic area can you experience the early morning and night. Staying outside will miss half of it.
- Stone-paved streets are slippery, so make sure elder companions wear non-slip shoes.
- During holidays, crowds are huge, so visit on weekdays if possible.
- Dining options inside the scenic area are limited and relatively expensive, so it’s okay to bring some food.
