Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide
Five-Flower Lake · Nuorilang Waterfall · Huanglong · Plateau Water Colors
The water color of Jiuzhaigou is one of the most difficult landscapes in China to capture in photographs: travertine dams divide the valleys into a series of colorful pools, with colors changing according to the season and light. This site organizes the routes within the three valleys, seasonal choices, and the arrangement for Huanglong.
This site only handles information compilation and itinerary design; prices and bookings are based on final confirmation.
Destination Details
core of Jiuzhaigou is not the "lake," but the tracification in the water. Calcium carbonate-rich water accumulates dams in the valley, cutting the stream into stepped pools. The algae, moss, and minerals at the bottom selectively absorb light, creating gradients of blue, green, yellow, and brown. This mechanism is a product of which only 60% of the photos can capture
Key highlights
Five-flower Sea
This is the most colorful lake in all of Jiuzhaigou and is widely recognized as number one. The viewing platform is by the roadside. Walking down to the boardwalk of the Peacock River, you can clearly see the details of the travertine and fallen logs. The morning light is cooler and the colors clear; the afternoon is warmer, each with its own unique charm
Norilang Waterfall
The wide, travertine waterfall is a landmark of Jiuzhaigou. It has its own viewing platform, and around noon rainbows are often visible. The nearby Nuorilang Visitor Center is the junction of the three gullies and serves as a dining and transfer spot
How do you arrange the three ditches
?The scenic area is Y-shaped: Shuzhenggou (near the entrance, with dense lakes), Rizegou (Wuhua Lake, Pearl Beach, Arrow Bamboo Lake), and Zechawa Valley (Changhai, Wucai Pond). Finishing the walk in one day requires a rush; two days is the most comfortable: on the first day, you can walk through Zezegou at Zecha Valley, and on the second day, you can walk slowly in Shuzheng Valley. There are sightseeing buses in the scenic area, stopping at every stop
Huanglong
It often forms a set with Jiuzhaigou, but the terrain is completely different: Huanglong is a massive open-air travertine ladder pool, at a higher altitude (about 3200–3600 meters), where altitude sickness is more pronounced. The Five-Color Pool is the most highlight. When physical strength and time are limited, Jiuzhaigou takes priority
Recommended stops and flow routes
- 2 days: two days inside the valley, or one day inside the valley, one day at Huanglong
- Day 3: Two days at Jiuzhaigou, one day at Huanglong, with a calm and composed pace
- There are many accommodation options in Goukou, but you cannot stay overnight within the scenic area; you must enter and exit daily
The best season
Mid-October to mid-November is widely recognized as the best window: moderate water flow, most vibrant forests, and stable weather. From April to June, the water is clear and there are fewer tourists; July and August are the rainy season, with high water volume but slightly murky water and a risk of falling rocks; December to March offers unique scenery for the ice waterfalls, though some boardwalks are closed
Local reminder
The- scenic area enforces crowd control and real-name reservations, so be sure to buy tickets in advance during peak season
- The altitude isn't high, but the drop is steep, so elders and children slow down
- No aircraft or drones are allowed inside the ditch, and you must not go down to the water from the boardwalk.
- The temperature difference at the ditch mouth is large day and night, so bring a jacket even in summer.
