AttentionThe Mogao Caves implement strict reservations and crowd limits, and tickets are very tight during the peak season.

Dunhuang's significance comes from it being a "crossroads." Since the Han and Tang dynasties, caravans, monks, and envoys would diverge here: heading west through Yangguan or Yumenguan into the Western Regions, or returning east to the Central Plains. Faith, art, and language accumulated here for a thousand years, ultimately remaining in the more than four hundred caves of the Mogao Caves.

Key Highlights

Mogao Caves

Advance reservation is required, and tickets are tiered: regular tickets include guided tours and multiple caves, while emergency tickets allow access to fewer caves. Photography is completely prohibited inside the caves, and touching the murals is not recommended—the moisture and carbon dioxide from breath are harmful to millennium-old murals. The visiting order is guided by a lecturer, and caves are randomly assigned as a standard protection measure, so there's no need to insist on seeing a "specific cave." After touring the caves, don’t miss the exhibition center and the dome cinema with digital displays, as they provide the best understanding of the overall context.

Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake

A scenic combination of sand dunes and a spring; the spring is surrounded by dunes but never dries up for thousands of years. The best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon—at noon, the sand is extremely hot and the light is flat. Camel riding and sand sliding are common activities, and shoe covers are recommended for walking on the sand. Watching the sunset from the sand dunes with the lights of Crescent Lake turning on is a classic view.

Yumenguan and Yadan

The western route includes Yumenguan, the Han Great Wall, and Yadan Ghost City. Yadan consists of wind-eroded earth mounds; the light and shadow at sunset are special, but it is far with a long drive (about 3 hours one way), so plan a full day. The eastern route includes Mogao Caves and Crescent Lake town.

Shazhou Night Market

The liveliest place at night, offering donkey meat noodles, apricot peel drink, and grilled lamb skewers. It is also a place to buy crafts. Prices can be moderately bargained.

Recommended Stay and Itinerary

  • 2 days: Half a day at Mogao Caves, half a day at Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, one day for the western route.
  • 3 days: Add the museum and eastern route for a more complete pace.
  • Hexi Corridor route: Lanzhou—Zhangye—Jiayuguan—Dunhuang, a mature route accessible by high-speed rail and flights.

Best Season

May to October. May–June and September–October have moderate temperatures and good lighting; July–August are hot during the day but have long daylight hours, allowing nighttime activities; winter is cold but has very few tourists, making the Mogao Caves experience actually the best.

Local Tips

  • Mogao Caves must be booked in advance through official channels with real-name verification. During peak season, booking several weeks ahead is recommended.
  • Inside the caves, photography, touching, and the use of flash are prohibited.
  • The desert has intense sunlight and a large temperature difference between day and night, so sunscreen and a jacket should be brought.
  • The western route is long and has few supply points, so bring enough water and dried food.
