Mount Wudang was listed as a World Heritage site in 1994 as an "ancient architectural complex": Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty built nine palaces and eight temples on the mountain with imperial standards, following the natural terrain without cutting the mountain or diverting water. It is also the origin of internal martial arts, and the martial arts schools at the foot of the mountain still teach to this day.

Recommended Stay and Routes

  • Recommended stay: 2–3 days.
  • Connecting with other nearby destinations makes the route more efficient. Refer to the "Extended Routes" and "Province" sections below.

Local Tips

  • To see the sunrise at the Golden Summit, you need to stay on the mountain; queues for the cable car are long during peak season.
  • There are many steps on the mountain paths. If your knees are not good, you can use the cable car and the stretcher service for the entire route.
  • Combining with the Three Gorges makes for the smoothest 7-day itinerary in Hubei.
