TrafficXining serves as the gateway, and the full length of the highway around the lake is about 360 kilometers.
AttentionThe salt lake must be windless and have a thin layer of water to achieve the mirror effect.

The colors of Qinghai Lake can be deceptive. Depending on the weather, it can be deep blue, blue-gray, dark green, or even lead-color, depending on the thickness of the clouds and the angle of the sun. Many people say after just half a day that 'it's not as blue as imagined,' most likely because they encountered cloudy skies

Key highlights

Lakeside Road

A

circle around the lake is about 360 kilometers. Cycling is the classic activity (usually completed in 3–4 days), while self-driving or chartered cars can cover the main points in two days. Erlangjian is the most fully developed scenic area; Heima River is famous for watching the sunrise; Bird Island is liveliest during the migratory season (May to July); The Gangcha side is relatively quiet. From July to August, rapeseed flowers bloom along the lake, making it the most photogenic season for Qinghai Lake

Chaka Salt Lake

The establishment of the "Sky Mirror" requires strict conditions: no wind, a thin layer of water, and suitable lighting angles. When the wind blows, the water surface wrinkles, and the mirror effect disappears immediately. Therefore, it's best to choose early morning or evening to avoid windy days. There are small trains and salt sculptures in the scenic area. When entering the salt lake, please wear shoe covers; the salt grains are very hard

Ta'er Monastery

One of the six major monasteries of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism, it is the birthplace of Master Tsongkhapa. The three masterpieces—butter flowers, murals, and embroidery—are must-see crafts. Most halls inside the temple prohibit photography; the prayer circumambulation proceeds clockwise. It is located near Xining and usually takes half a day at the beginning or end of the loop

Northwest Grand Loop

Xining—Ta'er Monastery—Qinghai Lake—Chaka—Delingha—Dachaidan—Dunhuang is a classic route repeatedly tested, linking plateau lakes, salt lakes, yardangs, and the Silk Road, usually taking 7–10 days

Recommended stops and flow routes

  • 4 days: Xining → Ta'er Monastery → Qinghai Lake two-day → Chaka → return
  • Over 6 days: Connect to Dachaidan and Dunhuang, completing the entire Northwest Loop
  • Cycling around the lake requires an additional 3–4 days, with physical and elevation requirements

The best season

June to September. July to August are the peak season and most expensive periods for

rapeseed flowers and the greenest pastures; June and September are less crowded and have better lighting; In winter, the lake surface freezes, creating a vast area with extremely low temperatures and some facilities closed

Local reminder

At
  • altitudes above 3000 meters, avoid strenuous exercise and pay attention to sun protection and warmth
  • Wearing shoe covers in salt lake water can irritate both shoes and skin
  • Some sections around the lake have limited supplies, so fuel and food must be refilled and stocked in advance
  • Respect the regulations of local herders and temples, and do not enter pastures and prayer halls without permission.
