Best Months to Visit China: Regional Monthly Guide

China spans multiple climate zones and does not have a "nationwide peak season." This article is divided into North China, Jiangnan, Southwest, Northwest, Northeast, and South China, explaining the weather, scenery, and crowd levels month by month to help you choose the right month to travel.

Updated on 2026-10-28

There is no single answer to the question of "which month is best to visit China." China's latitude and terrain differences determine that within the same month, the northeast freezes, Hainan swims, and Tibet experiences snow. The truly effective approach is to first decide the region, then the month

The best month for zoning

North China (Beijing, Xi'an, Shandong).

April–May and September–October. Spring is dry with good flowers; Autumn has stable blue skies and high visibility. July and August are hot and rainy, while December and February are dry and cold but have the fewest tourists

Jiangnan (Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuzhen, Shanghai).

March to May and September to November. Peach and willow trees in spring and osmanthus in autumn are bonus points. June to July is the plum rain season, wet and sticky; July to August is hot

Southwest (Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou

).

March–May and September–November. Yunnan has distinct wet and dry seasons; May to October is the rainy season but also the greenest period for meadows; Jiuzhaigou's golden window is from mid-October to mid-November

Northwest (Silk Road, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia).

June to September is the only comfortable window. Qinghai Lake and Hulunbuir are best in July and August; Dunhuang is from May to October; The Silk Road is extremely cold in winter but has very few tourists

Northeast (Harbin, Snow Town).

It is

only established from December to February of the following year. The snow mushrooms in Snow Town are not fully piled up until late December

South China (Sanya, Xiamen, Guilin).

Sanya: October to April of the following year; Xiamen: March–May and October–December; Guilin: April–October, with September–October offering the best comprehensive season

Three time periods to avoid

  • Around the Spring Festival: Peak crowds nationwide, with most expensive airfare and accommodation, and crowd limits at popular scenic spots
  • National Day holiday (October 1–7): Crowds of the same level as during the Lunar New Year, with crowds limited in places like the Forbidden City, Jiuzhaigou, and Zhangjiajie
  • Summer vacation (July–August): Students and families with children gather, prices rise, and the south remains hot

Quick check for each month

  • March: Spring scenery in Jiangnan, flowers in Yunnan, misty rain in Guilin
  • April–May: The best in North China, Huangshan and Zhangjiajie's sea of clouds, and the Longji Terraced Fields are irrigated
  • June: The northwest starts entering its window period, and Jiangnan experiences the plum rain. July–August: Grasslands and Qinghai Lake reach their peak, high demand for summer retreats, and the south is hot. September–October: The two months with the best overall conditions across the country, Jiuzhaigou in autumn colors, Hulunbuir birch forests turning golden. November: The colorful forests of Jiuzhaigou are ending, Jiangnan shows autumn scenery, Sanya enters peak season. December–February: Northeast has ice and snow, Sanya for escaping the cold, nationwide off-season.
