Hulunbuir Travel Guide
Grassland · Erguna · Mo'erdaoga · Nomadic Culture
Hulunbuir is the best-preserved natural grassland in China. The summer grass waves and the autumn birch forests are two completely different faces. This site organizes the grassland circuit routes, actual experiences of staying in a Mongolian yurt, and seasonal windows.
This site only handles information compilation and itinerary design; prices and bookings are based on final confirmation.
Destination Details
The scale of the grassland is the part that is most difficult to convey. The sense of distance on the grassland is completely different from that in the city: you might see a mountain, but it could still take forty minutes to drive there; you might see a cloud's shadow moving on the ground, but that could be rain several kilometers away. Hulunbuir is one of the few places in China where people can still experience this feeling.
Key Highlights
Morizhigle River
Known as "the most winding river under heaven," the river meanders repeatedly across the grassland. From a high vantage point, it looks like a ribbon folded over and over. The highest viewpoint is on the slope on the side of Jinzhanghan, where the light in the morning or evening best highlights the shape of the river.
Erguna Wetland
One of the largest wetlands in Asia, the Genhe River winds through it, flanked by shrubs and meadows. Climbing the observation deck allows you to see the entire river valley, making it one of the best viewpoints along the loop.
Moredauga and Birch Forest
Heading north into the Greater Khingan Range, the vegetation changes from grassland to coniferous forests and birch forests. The birch forest turns golden in mid to late September, which is the highlight of the autumn loop. Roads and supply conditions in the forest area are worse than on the grassland, so plan accordingly.
Nomadic and Herdsman Experience
Visiting herders allows you to milk cows, watch sheep shearing, ride horses, and drink milk tea. Choose officially operated herder locations, respect the owners and animals, and do not enter pastures or chase flocks without permission. Staying in a yurt is a distinctive experience, but sound insulation and warmth are limited, so those sensitive to cold should be mentally prepared.
Suggested Stays and Routes
- 5 Days: Hailar → Morizhigle River → Erguna → Enhe/Shiwei → Return.
- 7 Days: Include Moredauga and Manzhouli direction for a more complete loop.
- The grassland loop basically requires car rental or joining a tour; public transport cannot connect the sites.
Best Season
June—September. July to August has the greenest grass and the most comfortable climate, which is also peak season; late August to mid-September is hay season and early autumn colors; mid to late September the birch forest turns golden, a perfect time for photography; winter is extremely cold, but Nadam festival and snowy plains are also scenic.
Local Tips
- Day and night temperature differences can exceed 15°C, so bring a thick jacket even in summer.
- Grasslands have many mosquitoes, so mosquito repellent and long sleeves are essential.
- When horse riding, choose an official stable, follow the coach’s instructions, and do not ride freely.
- Do not trample the grasslands or pick plants; grassland ecology recovers very slowly.
