Lugu Lake Travel Guide

Mosuo · Walking Marriage Bridge · Lige Peninsula · Pig Trough Boat

Lugu Lake spans Yunnan and Sichuan and is the matriarchal homeland of the Mosuo people: a pig trough boat paddles to the lake's central island, the walking marriage bridge crosses the Caohai, and the sunrise at Lige Peninsula. Three to four days is the most comfortable.

AirportsLijiang Sanyi Airport, driving time from the airport to Lugu Lake is 3.5–4 hours
Getting aroundThe road around the lake can be rented for private cars, and there are also buses between the villages.

What makes Lugu Lake attractive is not just its water color—it is one of the few matriarchal societies still functioning in China. The Mosuo people's "walking marriage" and the matrilocal house form a completely different family structure. The lake is at an altitude of 2,690 meters, and on clear days, you can see ten meters below the water. The pig trough boat, a type of dugout canoe, has been used by locals for hundreds of years. The downside is the distance: it takes four hours to get there from Lijiang, so it is worth staying for more than three nights.

Key Highlights

Lige Peninsula

The peninsula stretches into the center of the lake and is Lugu Lake's most classic photographic angle, with lighting at both sunrise and sunset.

Caohai and Walking Marriage Bridge

A wooden bridge over a marshland; the Mosuo people's "walking marriage" custom is named after this bridge.

Gemu Goddess Mountain

The highest point in the lake area; from the cable car, you can overlook the entire Lugu Lake and surrounding villages.

Da Luoshui Village

The earliest tourist village on the Yunnan side, with a concentrated dock, suitable for first-time stays.

Goddess Bay

The bay on the Sichuan side, less crowded, with the calmest lake surface at sunset.

  • The altitude is nearly 2,700 meters; avoid intense exercise and alcohol on the first day.
