Staying one night on Gulangyu is the key to this itinerary: the island is different during the day and at night. Tulou are large rammed earth buildings where the Hakka people live in clans, and it is worth spending a whole day to explore one set in depth.

    15:00 Take the ferry to Gulangyu Island according to your reserved time. Motor vehicles are prohibited on the island; all must be walking.

    19:00 After the tourists disperse, the island is very quiet—this is the best part of a one-night stay.

    10:30 Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, the classic 'Four Dishes and One Soup'—one square building in the center, four round buildings surrounding it. The best view from the viewing platform is clear.
