Destination Details
Kunming being called the 'Spring City' is not just a promotional slogan: it sits at an elevation of nearly 1,900 meters, has a low latitude, and is not directly affected by cold waves, resulting in small temperature differences throughout the year. For travelers, the real value of Kunming is as a 'gateway buffer'—arriving from the plains, stay here for a day before heading to Dali, Lijiang, or Shangri-La, which helps reduce the effects of altitude sickness.
Highlights
Stone Forest
A UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, the quintessential Karst stone forest. The main areas include the Big Stone Forest, the Small Stone Forest, and the Naigu Stone Forest. The most classic 'Stone Forest' inscription and the Ashima Stone Peak are located in the Small Stone Forest. The scenic area is large, and it's recommended to take a sightseeing bus to connect the spots, saving your energy for exploring the peaks. The lighting is best in the afternoon when the shadows enhance the three-dimensional effect of the stone peaks.
Dianchi Lake and Haigeng
The largest plateau lake in Yunnan. Haigeng Park offers an open view, with a clear outline of the Western Hills across the lake. From November to March, large flocks of black-headed gulls fly from Siberia, creating the most recognizable winter scene in Kunming. The best spots to watch the gulls are Haigeng Dam and Cuihu Lake.
Cuihu Park and the City Center
Cuihu Park is located in the city center, perfect for birdwatching in winter and enjoying lotus flowers in summer. Nearby are Yunnan University and old neighborhoods. In the city, Yuantong Temple and Jinma Biji Square are great for an evening stroll.
Jiuxiang and Surroundings
Jiuxiang caves can easily be paired with the Stone Forest in a single day. The two have different landscapes: Stone Forest showcases the surface terrain, while Jiuxiang explores the underground caves. If time is limited, you can choose only the Stone Forest.
Recommended Stays and Routes
- 1 day: City center Cuihu and Dianchi Lake, or directly a full-day Stone Forest trip.
- 2 days: One day for the Stone Forest, half a day in the city, then take a high-speed train to Dali.
- As a transit stop: Spend the arrival day in Kunming, then head to the plateau the next day for the most stable schedule.
Best Season
Suitable all year round. November to March is the season for watching gulls and enjoying the distinctive scene with black-headed gulls; March to May is best for flowers; June to August is the rainy season, but temperatures are comfortable, and it is the season when mushrooms are available.
Local Tips
- During the wild mushroom season (summer and autumn), only eat them at reputable restaurants and do not forage on your own.
- UV radiation is strong, so take sun protection even if the temperature isn't high.
- The Stone Forest scenic area is large, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water during summer.
- Changshui Airport is about 30 km from the city center, accessible by both metro and airport shuttle bus.
