Central Avenue was first built in 1898 and is about 1.4 kilometers long. The pavement is made of square granite blocks, commonly known as 'bread stones,' which were said to be worth one silver dollar each at the time. On both sides of the street are buildings left by immigrants from various countries. The styles are mixed but harmonize as a whole, making it the most recognizable section in Harbin.

Main Highlights

Building Facades

Along the street, you can see a variety of styles such as eclecticism, Baroque, and the Art Nouveau movement. From the second story upwards, the pediments, wrought iron balconies, and window frames are especially worth looking up at. The old buildings like the Modern Hotel and the Education Bookstore are representative works.

Modern Popsicles

This is the most famous product on Central Avenue, originating from the Modern Hotel in 1906. Standing on the street with a popsicle in minus twenty degrees Celsius is a quintessential Harbin scene.

Walk to the River

The northern end of the street features the Flood Control Monument and Stalin Park. Going further leads to the Songhua River. In winter, the river surface freezes, providing ice activities; in summer, it is a riverside for cooling off.

Suggested Stay

  • 2 hours: strolling the street, eating popsicles, riverside.
  • Half a day: add Saint Sophia Church and old Daowai district.

Local Tips

  • Winter temperatures can drop to below minus 20 degrees Celsius, and phone and camera batteries drain very quickly.
  • The pavement can be icy, so non-slip shoes and ice cleats are highly recommended.
  • Summer is the peak season for escaping the heat, so accommodations should be booked early.
