Tianshan Tianchi Travel Guide
Bogda Peak · Alpine Lakes · Stabilizing Pillar of the Sea
Heavenly Lake of Tianshan is a high mountain lake on the northern slope of Bogda Peak, with a lake surface at an altitude of about 1,900 meters, where snow-capped peaks, spruce trees, and the lake can all be seen in the same frame. It is one of the most accessible high mountain landscapes in Xinjiang and can be visited round-trip in a day from Urumqi.

Destination Details
Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains is located within Fukang City, about 100 kilometers east of Urumqi. It is a glacial dam lake on the upper reaches of the San Gong River. On the southern shore of the lake lies Bogda Peak, the second-highest peak in the Tianshan Mountains at an altitude of 5,445 meters, which is snow-covered all year round; the lake shore is lined with extensive snow ridge spruces. This vertical layering of "snow line—forest—lake surface" is what sets it apart from other high mountain lakes.
Main Highlights
Lake Surface and Boat Rides
The main lake is crescent-shaped, with a boardwalk around it. Taking a boat to the center of the lake allows you to see the reflection of Bogda Peak head-on; when there is no wind, the water surface is like a mirror. The old elm tree by the lake, known as the "Stabilizing Sea Needle," is Tianchi's most famous landmark.
West Small Tianchi and Feilong Pool
Walking from the main lake upstream, the West Small Tianchi is smaller and quieter, with nearby waterfalls and Feilong Pool ideal for leisurely visits. This section has noticeably fewer tourists.
Mayashan Cable Car
For an additional fee, you can take the cable car up Mayashan, where you can overlook the entire Tianchi and Bogda Peak. It is highly worthwhile on a clear day.
Recommended Stay
- Half day: Boardwalk around the lake and boat ride.
