Yangguan Travel Guide
Beacon Tower Ruins · Yangguan Museum · I Advise You to Drink Another Cup of Wine
Only a single dilapidated Han Dynasty beacon tower remains on Dun Dun Mountain, surrounded by Gobi Desert in all directions. Its significance lies entirely in poetry—'I urge you to drink another cup of wine; west of Yangguan, there will be no old friends.' Standing under the beacon tower and looking west, it is truly the frontier beyond the Great Wall.

Destination Details
Yangguan is located about seventy kilometers southwest of Dunhuang City, near the Gǔdǒngtan area. The pass was established during the Han Dynasty and was a crucial checkpoint on the southern route of the Silk Road. After the Song and Yuan Dynasties, it was abandoned due to changes in river courses and routes. Today, the physical remains visible above ground are mainly the Han Dynasty beacon tower on Dundun Mountain.
Main Highlights
Yangguan Beacon Tower
Built with rammed earth, it still stands over four meters high on a hill with the best vantage point. What truly impresses people is the environment: standing beneath the tower and looking around, the Gobi Desert stretches all the way to the horizon, with only the sound of the wind. There is nothing to block the view, nor any modern buildings, and a sense of timelessness is immediately felt.
Yangguan Museum
The museum is located at the foot of the beacon tower and provides a systematic explanation of the Han Dynasty frontier system, the Great Wall beacon tower system, and the routes of the southern Silk Road. The exhibits include Han Dynasty slips, pottery, and weapons. After visiting, returning to the beacon tower helps in understanding a lot more.
Suggested Route
- Yangguan → Yumenguan → Yadan Devil City, covering Dunhuang’s western line in a day.
- If time is limited: choose either Yumenguan or Yangguan. Yangguan offers stronger landscape impact and ceremonial significance.
Practical Information
There are no restaurants along the western route, so it is recommended to prepare water and snacks in Dunhuang City. During summer, surface temperatures can exceed 45℃, so wearing a hat and long sleeves is essential. In winter, the wind and sand are strong, so eye protection is necessary.
