Flame Mountain Travel Guide
Red sandstone mountains · Filming location of Journey to the West · Underground thermometer
Flame Mountain is a horizontal ochre-red sandstone mountain range. The mountain body radiates heat waves under the scorching sun, like burning fire. The surface temperature can reach up to 80°C, and a giant "Golden Cudgel" thermometer stands at the entrance of the scenic area.

Destination Details
Flaming Mountain is located in the central part of the Turpan Basin, stretching nearly a hundred kilometers from east to west. It is mainly composed of Mesozoic red sandstone and mudstone. The mountains are barren, and the folds in the strata show varying shades of ochre red under sunlight. Combined with the rising heat from the basin, it truly looks like it's burning from a distance.
Key Highlights
Mountain and Viewing Platform
There is a viewing platform built along the foot of the mountain, facing several of the most typical folds. In the early morning and late afternoon, the slanting sunlight highlights the layers most clearly; at noon, everything appears blindingly white, making details hard to see.
Journey to the West Cultural Area
The story of Sun Wukong passing through Flaming Mountain in "Journey to the West" has made this mountain a nationally recognized name. Inside the scenic area, there are statues of Princess Iron Fan and Bull Demon King, as well as related scenes, which families with children usually linger to see. The giant "Golden Cudgel" at the entrance is actually a thermometer, showing real-time ground temperature.
Suggested Route
- Flaming Mountain → Grape Valley → Jiaohe Ancient City, a one-day route along Turpan's east line.
- For photography only: a 40-minute stop is sufficient.
Practical Information
In summer, ground temperatures often exceed 70°C. Shoes with thin soles can burn your feet. Although the distance from the parking lot to the viewing platform is short, you need to walk quickly. It is recommended to enter before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m., and bring plenty of drinking water.
