Shuanglin Temple Travel Guide
Ming Dynasty Polychrome Sculpture · Statue of Weituo · Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara
There are more than two thousand Ming Dynasty colored sculptures in Shuanglin Temple, and the ten halls are packed full. The most famous is the Wei Tuo statue in the Hall of a Thousand Buddhas—its body twisted into an S-shape and hailed as 'the crown of all Wei Tuo statues in the country.'

Destination Details
Shuanglin Temple is located in Qiaotou Village, southwest of Pingyao County, originally named Zhongdu Temple. It was rebuilt during the Northern Qi dynasty, and the existing buildings and painted sculptures mainly date back to the Ming dynasty. Out of the ten halls, over 2,000 painted sculptures are preserved, depicting almost every character in the Buddhist world.
Highlights
Thousand Buddha Hall - Wei Tuo Statue
This over one-meter-tall Wei Tuo statue is Shuanglin Temple's signature piece: the body twists in a pronounced S shape, with the head, waist, and legs oriented in different directions, yet it does not look awkward at all—the weight rests on the back foot, making it seem ready to move at any moment. The armor, flowing ribbons, and muscles are all highly dynamic.
Bodhisattva Hall and Heavenly Kings Hall
The Bodhisattva Hall primarily enshrines the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, with twenty-six arms fanned out, and layers of donor figures arranged behind her. The Heavenly Kings Hall houses four large statues of the Heavenly Kings; standing under them and looking up is quite imposing.
Suggested Route
- Classic: Heavenly Kings Hall → Shakyamuni Hall → Bodhisattva Hall → Thousand Buddha Hall → Niangniang Hall, roughly 1.5 hours.
- Can be combined with Pingyao Ancient City and Zhen Guo Temple for a full day trip.
Practical Information
Photography inside the halls is strictly prohibited; please follow the rules. The painted sculptures are sensitive to light, and the exhibition halls are generally dim, so it is recommended to approach the glass side-on and take your time observing. The temple is about six kilometers from the ancient city, and a round-trip by private car takes about half an hour.
