Nanjing Museum Travel Guide

History Museum · Special Exhibition Hall · Republic of China Hall

The Nanjing Museum is one of the earliest comprehensive museums in China, with over 400,000 collections. The most special feature is the 'Republic of China Hall' — an entire Republic of China street has been brought underground, including a post office, pawnshop, and train station, all of which you can walk into.

The Nanjing Museum is located in Banshan Garden inside the Zhongshan Gate. It was originally established in 1933 as the National Central Museum. Its significance lies not only in the architecture but also in its collection system: from the Paleolithic era all the way to the Republic of China period, the complete timeline of Jiangsu's land is basically all here.

Key Highlights

History Hall

Arranged in chronological order, bronzes, jade, pottery figurines, and calligraphy are displayed sequentially. The treasures of the museum include a Han Dynasty silver-inlaid bronze ox lamp and Ming Dynasty underglaze red pieces. The details are worth examining one by one.

Republic of China Hall

Underground, a street from the Republic of China period is directly reconstructed: pawnshops, post offices, teahouses, and a train station platform are all built to their original appearance, with a simulated sky above. It feels less like an exhibition hall and more like a set you can walk into, making it the most popular area of the Nanjing Museum.

Recommended Route

  • Three-hour version: History Hall → Special Exhibition Hall → Republic of China Hall → Digital Hall.
  • Combine with Zhongshan Mausoleum and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum for a full day in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing.

Practical Information

Admission is free but requires advance reservation via the official website or mini-program. The museum is closed on Mondays. It is cool inside, so a light jacket is recommended in summer. There are luggage storage and dining facilities on the first floor, and half a day is the most comfortable amount of time to spend here.
