Ming Xiaoling is the joint tomb of Zhu Yuanzhang and Empress Ma, and it is the pioneering work of the Ming and Qing royal tomb system. Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is located on the southern slope of Zhongshan Mountain in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing and was first built in 1381. It served as a model for the royal tombs of the Ming and Qing dynasties: later Ming Tombs and Qing Eastern Tombs all adopted its established layout of "front court, rear tomb" and the sequence of the spirit way.

Main Highlights

Stone Elephant Road

The first section of the spirit way, over 600 meters long, is lined on both sides with six types of stone animals in order: lions, xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin, and horses, with two pairs of each, one standing and one kneeling. The road deliberately curves around Meihua Mountain, forming a bend, which is a rare asymmetrical design in Chinese tombs. In autumn, the ginkgo and Chinese tallow trees change color, making it the most famous seasonal scenery in Nanjing.

Fangcheng Ming Tower

Passing through the civil and military gates and the stele hall, you reach the main structure of the mausoleum. Fangcheng is a tall city platform with a central arched gate; climbing the tower, you can see the round treasure mound behind it—Zhu Yuanzhang's tomb lies beneath this mound and has not yet been excavated.

Suggested Route

  • Xiamafang → Stone Elephant Road → Wengzhong Road → Civil and Military Gates → Fangcheng Ming Tower, about 2 hours.
  • Combine the tour with Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Meiling Palace, and Linggu Temple for a full day in Zhongshan Mountain.

Practical Information

The scenic area is very large; it takes about 15 minutes on foot from the subway station to the core area, and sightseeing bus tickets are available. Every March, during the bloom at Meihua Mountain, it is the busiest, while in November, the foliage on Stone Elephant Road is at its best; it is recommended to arrive early during both periods.
