Destination Details
West Street is located in the center of Yangshuo County. Although it is less than one kilometer long, it is the most famous street in Guilin tourism. Its history can be traced back more than 1,400 years. Originally, it was a village market by the Li River. After being discovered by backpackers in the 1980s, it gradually developed into the current mix of Chinese and Western styles.
Main Highlights
The Street Itself
The bluestone-paved road is flanked by two- to three-story old residential houses, whose storefronts have been converted into cafés, restaurants, and small shops. The most interesting thing is that almost all the signs are bilingual in Chinese and English — the level of internationalization on this street is rarely seen in county-level destinations.
Li River and Rock Climbing
Walking a few minutes to the end of the street leads to the Li River, where you can watch fishermen and cormorants at dusk. Yangshuo is also one of the best spots for sport climbing in China. Nearby, there are several established routes such as Moon Hill and the Big Banyan Tree. Even if you don't climb, you can sign up for an introductory course.
Suggested Itinerary
- Afternoon stroll on West Street → sunset by the Li River → evening beer fish and bar hopping.
- Next day, Li River bamboo rafting (Yangdi—Xingping) → cycling in the Ten-Mile Gallery.
Practical Information
During National Day and summer vacations, crowds are huge and accommodation prices double, so booking in advance is recommended. Beer fish is a local specialty — when ordering, clarify the fish type and weight. When cycling in the Ten-Mile Gallery, pay attention to sun protection and oncoming traffic.
