Kuanzhai Alley Travel Guide
Wide Alley · Narrow Alley · Well Alley
Kuan Zhai Alley is one of the three preserved Qing Dynasty alleys in Chengdu: Kuan Alley for living, Zhai Alley for leisurely drinking, and Jing Alley for marketplace activities. It is Chengdu's symbol of a 'slow' lifestyle and also one of the places most easily crowded with people.

Destination Details
Kuanzhai Alley consists of three parallel old streets: Wide Alley, Narrow Alley, and Well Alley. It preserves the street layout left from the Qing Dynasty's Mancheng (Shaocheng). After renovation, the old brick walls and courtyard gates were retained, and the interiors were converted into restaurants, teahouses, and small shops.
Main Attractions
Wide Alley
The widest alley and the most "courtyard-like," with well-preserved doorways and screen walls, making it ideal for viewing architecture. There are many teahouses along the street, and sitting down to drink a bowl of gaiwan tea is a typical activity.
Narrow Alley
Focused on dining and bars, with a high concentration of establishments and people. The atmosphere is best in the evening when the lanterns are lit.
Well Alley
More traditional and local, with small markets and creative stalls. The walls feature reliefs depicting old Chengdu life scenes.
Recommended Duration
- 1.5 hours: Walk through all three alleys.
- Over 3 hours: Find a teahouse to sit and relax.
Local Tips
- The crowds are huge on holidays; experiencing it early in the morning is completely different.
- Dining prices are on the higher side due to the tourist area; for authentic local flavors, walk to nearby small streets.
