The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is located in the northern suburbs of the city, covering an area of about 1,500 acres. It is one of the largest sites in the world for ex-situ conservation populations of giant pandas. The park is divided by panda age: Juvenile Panda Zone, Subadult Panda Zone, Adult Panda Zone, and there is also a red panda (lesser panda) free-range area.

Highlights

Juvenile Panda Villas

The most popular area. Several young cubs play, climb, and wrestle in the same enclosure. The best time to see them is around feeding time in the morning. The park controls visitor flow, so queuing is required.

Moon and Sun Delivery Rooms

These are the nurseries for newborn cubs, where you can watch the caretakers through glass. The birthing season occurs around early summer each year, during which you can see tiny pink cubs.

Bamboo Forest Trail

The park has a large amount of bamboo, creating shaded paths that are cool even in summer. Walking the whole trail takes about 3 hours, but there are sightseeing vehicles to save your legs.

Suggested Visit Duration

  • 3 hours: Juvenile Zone – main exhibits.
  • 4 hours or more: Full walk – includes the red panda area.

Local Tips

  • The earlier, the better; pandas generally start sleeping after 10 a.m.
