Dazu Rock Carvings Travel Guide

Baoding Mountain · Thousand-Hand Guanyin · North Mountain

The Dazu Rock Carvings are a group of cliff inscriptions from the late Tang to the Southern Song dynasty. The Thousand-Hand Avalokitesvara and the Six Realms of Reincarnation at Baodingshan, as well as the Wheel-Turning Sutra Repository Cave at Beishan, are representative works. Compared with Yungang and Longmen, its greatest feature is 'secularization' — the statues have expressions, tell stories, and convey a sense of life.

The Dazu Rock Carvings are located in Dazu District, Chongqing City. They were carved from the late Tang Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty, and there are currently more than 50,000 statues and over 100,000 characters of inscriptions. They inherit the traditions of Yungang and Longmen Caves, but their content is closer to folk beliefs and secular ethics, making the overall temperament quite different from the royal caves in northern China.

Main Highlights

Baodingshan Thousand-Hand Guanyin

On one cliff face, over a thousand arms are carved, each holding a ritual instrument. Restored over eight years, the statue now displays its golden form. Seeing it in person is extremely shocking, making it the most recognizable feature among Chinese grottoes.

Six Realms of Rebirth and the Sutra on the Profound Kindness of Parents

Buddhist teachings are depicted as a series of connected stories: the cycle of rebirth diagram, the Sutra on the Profound Kindness of Parents, and the Cowherd paintings. The figures have expressions and actions, resembling Song Dynasty social life paintings.

Beishan Rotating Sutra Repository Cave

The Beishan Caves are smaller in scale but more exquisitely crafted. The statues of Samantabhadra, Guanyin, and Manjushri in the Rotating Sutra Repository Cave feature delicate lines and are considered the most beautifully crafted cave in Dazu.
