Shapotou Travel Guide

Tengger Desert · Yellow River · Sandboarding · Sheepskin Raft

Shapotou is the place where the desert meets the Yellow River head-on: the dunes of the Tengger Desert drop directly to the banks of the Yellow River. You can go sand sliding, ride camels, or float a section on a sheepskin raft. It takes one to two days.

Getting aroundThere are shuttle buses within the scenic area, and the desert attractions are in the northern area.

The uniqueness of Shapotou can be summed up in one sentence: this is where the desert meets the Yellow River. The Baolan Railway passes through the middle of the sand dunes, and the Chinese invented the wheatgrass grid here to stabilize the sand, preserving a railway for sixty years — this history of sand control is worth seeing in itself. It is also the best midway stop between Yinchuan and Dunhuang, completing the desert sections of the Northwest Line.

Main Highlights

Southern Edge of the Tengger Desert

The dunes rise straight from the riverbank, representing China’s most typical 'desert meets river' landscape.

Yellow River Area and Sheep Skin Rafts

Rafts made by inflating entire sheets of sheepskin have been used for hundreds of years to cross the Yellow River in Zhongwei.

Sand Sliding Area

Sliding down sand slopes over a hundred meters high is Shapotou’s signature activity. There are also cable cars and desert elevators.

Camels and Desert Off-Roading

Camel riding across dunes and off-road vehicle sand adventures are in the northern area and require a separate ticket package.

Desert Star Hotel

An observatory hotel built on the dunes, where the Milky Way at night is a reason many people come specifically to stay.
