People's Park Travel Guide

Crane Singing Teahouse · Ear Cleaning · Slow Life in Chengdu

People's Park is the oldest park in Chengdu and also the place that feels most like Chengdu. In the Heming Teahouse, bamboo chairs and low tables fill the courtyard; spending a dozen yuan or so for a bowl of tea allows you to sit all day, while nearby, ear-cleaning masters walk back and forth — the slowness of Chengdu is all here.

People's Park is located in the center of Chengdu and was built in 1911, making it the first park in Chengdu. It is not far from Kuanzhai Alley, but it has a completely different atmosphere—there aren't many tourists performing for check-ins; instead, it's filled with locals going about their daily routines from morning till night.

Main Highlights

Heming Teahouse

The Heming Teahouse in the park is one of the most famous old teahouses in Chengdu, with bamboo chairs, low tables, and covered bowls of tea filling the entire courtyard. You order tea at the counter yourself, carry the teapot to find an empty seat, and can ask for a refill anytime. A bowl of tea costs a little over ten yuan, and you can sit for an entire afternoon without anyone rushing you. Nearby, ear-cleaning masters often walk around with their toolboxes, and the crisp sound of metal can be heard from a distance as they work.

Daily Life in the Park

Besides drinking tea, the park also has Goldfish Island, a bonsai garden, and a small grove. In the morning, people practice Tai Chi, dance, or play chess here; in the afternoon, the shade of the trees is filled with sunbeds where people nap. What is truly beautiful about People's Park is not the scenery, but these unadorned daily life scenes.

Railway Protection Movement Monument

The park has a monument commemorating the Sichuan Railway Protection Movement during the Xinhai Revolution, serving as a historical witness of the park as a modern public space and explaining why it was built here.

Suggested Route

  • Classic: Enter through the main gate → Drink tea at Heming Teahouse → Visit Goldfish Island → See the Railway Protection Movement Monument → Exit from the east gate, about 1.5 hours.
  • Combine with Kuanzhai Alley, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and Wuhou Shrine for a one-day Chengdu itinerary.

Practical Information

The park can be directly reached via People's Park Station on Metro Line 2, right at the exit. Seating in the teahouse is self-service, and on weekends and holidays it is often fully occupied, so it is recommended to visit on weekday mornings. If you want to experience ear-cleaning, you can watch someone else first, and prices are negotiated on the spot. The park has no entrance fee; tea is charged separately.
