Stilt House · Eleven-Layer Cliff · Spirited Away Night View

Hongyadong is built up eleven stories along the steep cliffs by the Jialing River, turning the traditional Bayu stilted houses into a three-dimensional commercial building complex. At night, the entire cliff face is brightly lit, presenting the most iconic scene of Chongqing, less than a kilometer away from Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street.

Hongya Cave is located on the banks of the Jialing River in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. Originally an old city area perched on a cliff by the river, it has now been built into an eleven-story stilted building complex—entering from the riverside road leads to eleven floors, and entering from the road above Cangbai Road leads to one floor. This is the most direct example of Chongqing's "three-dimensional city."

Key highlights

Lights glow on the cliff

walls

Hongya Cave is most famous for its night views. The entire structure is built along the cliff, with tiered terraces set in layers. At night, lights shine from the eaves, window lattices, and flying eaves, creating a golden hue clinging to the cliff wall. The view from the Qiansimen Bridge across the river is the most complete. Many people compare it to a scene from an animated film, which is why it became the first stop for night tours in Chongqing

Bayu Stilted House

The architecture adopts the traditional Bayu stilted house style: wooden or imitation wooden columns, beams, and cantilever eaves, which extend layer upon layer along the cliff height differences. During the day, architectural details are clearer than at night, with the blue tiles, wood color, and stone steps clearly visible

A maze of floors and streets

Each floor inside the building has a different theme: snacks, local specialties, coffee, and performances. The eleventh floor leads directly to the riverside road, the first floor connects to Cangbai Road, and there's a viewing platform in the middle where you can look straight at the Jialing River and the opposite bank. It's easy to confuse the floors when you're new here, but remember, 'both the top and bottom floors have access to the road' so you won't get lost

Suggested traffic flow

  • Classic: Cangbai Road first floor entry → descending floor by level → viewing platform → eleven floors by the river → looking back at Qiansimen Bridge, about 1.5 hours
  • Together with Jiefangbei, Yangtze River Cableway, and Ciqikou, it forms a two-day Chongqing itinerary

Practical information

Metro Line 2 Linjiangmen Station or Line 6 Xiaoshizi Station are within walking distance, less than one kilometer from Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, so you can arrange them together. Nighttime and holidays are extremely crowded, and the viewing platform is often crowded, so it's best to off-peak or travel early. Chongqing is hot and stuffy in summer, so departing in the evening is the most comfortable
