In the second year of the Yifeng era of the Tang Dynasty, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng came here to serve as abbot, spreading Buddhism here for thirty-seven years. Key Highlights

True Body Statue of the Sixth Patriarch

Inside the Sixth Patriarch Hall is enshrined the preserved body of Huineng after his passing, treated using traditional Chinese techniques of cloth-lacquer layering and scented clay. It has been preserved for 1,300 years and sits lifelike. This is the most fundamental relic of Nanhua Temple and one of the oldest preserved bodhisattva bodies in China.

Thousand Buddha Robe and Tang Dynasty Imperial Decree

The temple treasures a Tang Dynasty Thousand Buddha Robe with exquisite embroidery; it also holds an imperial decree from Empress Wu Zetian and a crystal alms bowl. These, together with the true body of the Sixth Patriarch, form the temple’s most treasured artifacts, rarely seen by the public, but can be viewed in special temple exhibitions.

Zhuoxi Spring and Ancient Trees

Legend has it that when the Sixth Patriarch struck the ground with his staff, water sprang forth, forming Zhuoxi Spring, which has never dried up. The temple is surrounded by towering ancient trees, mostly banyan and camphor trees over several hundred years old, providing immediate coolness in summer.
