Mogao Caves Travel Guide

Dunhuang Caves · Digital Exhibition Center · Special Cave

The Mogao Caves are the most significant site along the Silk Road: over 700 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals, more than 2,000 painted sculptures, with excavation continuing for a full thousand years. It is also one of China’s most 'difficult to access' heritage sites—limited entry, reservations, rotating cave exhibitions, and what you see depends quite a bit on luck.

This site only handles information compilation and itinerary design; prices and bookings are based on final confirmation.

The Mogao Caves are located on the eastern foothills of Mingsha Mountain, about 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang city. Excavation began in the second year of the Jianyuan era of the Former Qin dynasty and continued through the Northern Wei, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Western Xia, and Yuan dynasties, lasting nearly a thousand years without interruption. Among the 735 existing caves, 492 contain murals and painted sculptures, making it the largest and richest Buddhist art site in the world.

Key Highlights

Digital Exhibition Center

The current visit process starts with watching two dome films at the digital exhibition center in the city, then taking a shuttle bus to the cave area. The films are not just for show; they clearly explain the excavation of the caves, the patrons, and the content of the murals. After watching, visitors will understand much more when entering the caves.

Physical Caves

With a regular ticket, visitors are led by a guide to randomly view 8 caves. The randomness is a protective measure—the caves rotate opening to control carbon dioxide levels and humidity. If lucky, visitors might see Cave 96 with its nine-story giant Buddha, the Sutra Library in Cave 17, or the Northern Wei central pillar cave.

Special Caves

Caves 45, 57, 156, 158, and others require purchasing special cave tickets, charged per cave, with more detailed explanations. If time and budget allow, experiencing one special cave often surpasses visiting eight regular caves.

Recommended Stay

  • Half a day: Digital center + cave area, about 4 hours.
  • One day: Add Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring, and watch the sunset in the evening.

Local Tips

  • Photography and touching inside the caves are strictly prohibited; cameras must be stored at the entrance.
  • The cave area has no shade at noon; sunscreen and water are essential.
  • Tickets sell out early during peak season, so be sure to book through the official channels.
