Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake Travel Guide
Sand Dunes · Camel Caravan · Desert Sunset
Mingsha Mountain surrounds a crescent-shaped spring; the sand does not cover the spring, and the spring never dries up, making it the most straightforward calling card of Dunhuang. Climbing the sand ridge at dusk to watch the sunset, the silhouettes of camel caravans crossing the ridge is the scene most worth waiting for on this trip.

Destination Details
Mingsha Mountain is about 5 kilometers south of Dunhuang City. The sand dunes rise and fall like blades, and when people slide down the sand slopes, the sand grains produce a humming sound, hence the name. At the foot of the mountain, Crescent Lake is shaped like a new moon, surrounded by ancient buildings and reeds. The co-existence of sand and water for thousands of years without silting is the most incredible feature of this landscape.
Key Attractions
Climbing the Sand Mountain to Watch the Sunset
The main sand ridge has a steep slope. It takes about 30-40 minutes to climb, and your feet will sink into the sand, which consumes a lot of energy. However, from the ridge, you can see the entire Crescent Lake and Dunhuang City in the distance. At sunset, the sand surface changes from gold to red. Be sure to start climbing 90 minutes before sunset.
Camel Riding
Camel teams follow fixed routes through the sand valleys, and a trip takes about 40 minutes. There are teams in the morning and in the evening. The evening light is the best, but the line is also the longest.
By Crescent Lake
The Mingyue Pavilion, the ruins of the Medicine King Temple, and a surrounding circle of reeds are the best angles for photographing the "lake in the sand." The midday light is too harsh, while morning and evening light are good.
Suggested Stay
- 3 hours: camel riding, visiting the lakeside, and climbing a small section of the sand slope.
- More than 4 hours: full ridge climb and waiting for sunset.
Local Tips
- The surface temperature of the sand is extremely high at noon, so avoid 12–16:00.
- Rent shoe covers or wear high-top shoes, as fine sand in shoes is very uncomfortable.
- During strong wind and sand storms, camel rides and sand sliding activities may be temporarily suspended in the scenic area.
