Mengle Grand Buddha Temple is located on the hills south of Jinghong City in Xishuangbanna. Built along the mountains with tiered elevations, it is the largest Theravada Buddhist temple in the local area. It is situated near the old site of the ancient Mengle royal city, and the "Mengle" in its name is the former name of Xishuangbanna.

Highlights

Golden Buddha on the Hilltop

Walking along the central axis, you will reach the large golden seated Buddha at the end. The statue shines brightly in the sunlight against the backdrop. Standing on the platform in front of the Buddha and looking back, you can take in a panoramic view of Jinghong city and the winding Lancang River — this is the best viewing spot in the temple and one of the rare vantage points overlooking Xishuangbanna.

Theravada Architecture

The temple's buildings adopt a Theravada style influenced by Dai, Burmese, and Thai traditions: multi-layered sloping roofs with flame-shaped ridge decorations and golden spires, featuring bold color schemes. Unlike the symmetrical courtyards of Han Chinese Buddhist temples, this is the most intuitive place to understand the local Buddhist culture.

Festivals and Square

There is a wide square at the base of the hill, which serves as an important venue for celebrations during the Water Splashing Festival. On regular days, monks and devotees frequent the area, offering a genuine religious atmosphere rather than a performance.

Suggested Route

  • Classic: Mountain Gate → Hall of the Heavenly Kings → Main Hall → Climb to the top → Golden Buddha Platform → Square, about 1.5 hours.
  • Combine with Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, Manting Park, and Wild Elephant Valley for a three-day tour of Xishuangbanna.

Practical Information

It takes about fifteen minutes by taxi from Jinghong city center. The route involves climbing quite a few stairs, and it is quite sunny at noon, so morning or evening visits are recommended. Shoes must be removed before entering the halls, and shoulders and knees should be covered. The rainy season (May–October) is hot and humid, while November to April is the most comfortable time to visit.
