Kashgar Old Town is located in the center of Kashgar City and is the old city area where the Uyghur people have lived for generations. The houses are mainly made of adobe and poplar wood, with thick walls and small windows, adapted to the continental climate. The alleys in the city are organized by handicraft trades: there is Earthenware Alley, Ironware Alley, Hat Bazaar, and Flower Hat Bazaar, and after a few steps, you will find another craft.

Main Highlights

The Alleys Themselves

The value of the old town lies in being "alive" — residents bake naan and chat in their courtyards, children play football at the alley entrances. The blue and green door frames painted on the walls contrast strongly with the yellow-brown walls. It is recommended to walk around casually, without following a map.

Earthenware and Copper Workshops

A few workshops in Earthenware Alley still make traditional vessels, where you can watch wheel-throwing and glazing on site. Copper and wood workshops are mostly concentrated on Handicraft Street, with the sound of hammering constantly in the air.

Stilted Residences

At the northeast corner of the city, there is a stilted cliff-side residence, with houses stacked layer upon layer upward, being one of the oldest areas of the old town, with some parts accessible after maintenance.

Suggested Duration

  • Half a day: Main alleys and Handicraft Street.
  • One day: Add Stilted Residences, Xiangfei Garden, and Cattle and Sheep Bazaar (on Sundays).

Local Tips

  • Always ask before entering courtyards or taking photos of people. Most residents are friendly but require respect.
  • Midday light is harsh; early morning and evening light are best.
  • The bazaar is busiest on Sundays, so you can plan your schedule accordingly.
