East Lake is the largest urban lake in China, with a water area of about 33 square kilometers, and the greenway around the lake stretches over a hundred kilometers. Scenic areas such as Tingtao, Moshan, and Luoyan each have their own character, and cycling around the entire lake is how many travelers spend a whole day in Wuhan.

East Lake is located in the eastern part of Wuchang District, Wuhan, and is made up of multiple lake bays. It serves both as a scenic area and urban infrastructure: the lakeside greenway connects the lake, wetlands, universities, and residential areas, with many locals running and cycling here in the mornings and evenings.

Main Highlights

East Lake Greenway

Over 100 kilometers long, it is divided into sections such as the Central Lake Path, Lakeside Mountain Path, and Moshan Path. Renting a shared bike to ride along the lake is the most cost-effective and comfortable way. The cherry blossom park and the Moshan area are the busiest during cherry blossom season.

Moshan Scenic Area

A scenic area themed around Chu culture, with Chu City, Chu Market, and Zhu Bei Pavilion. The plum garden and cherry blossom park at the southern foot of Moshan belong to the winter and spring seasons respectively.

Tingtao and Luoyan

Tingtao Scenic Area is the oldest section, featuring lakeside pavilions and the Poetry Pavilion; Luoyan Scenic Area is relatively wild, with wetlands and migratory birds as its highlights.

Suggested Stay

  • Half day: Ride a section of the greenway, Moshan.
  • One day: Cycle around the lake, Luoyan Wetland.

Local Tips

  • During cherry blossom season, crowds are very large; it is recommended to enter the park early in the morning.
  • In summer, the lakeside has many mosquitoes; bring insect repellent.
  • Some sections of the greenway have no supply points; carry enough water.
