Destination Details
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. It was funded collectively by Chen clans from various parts of Guangdong as a communal ancestral hall, providing temporary lodging for children traveling to the provincial capital for examinations. The building's decorations are extremely elaborate, summarized as "three carvings, two sculptures, one casting."
Main Highlights
Wood Carvings and Screen Doors
The twelve carved screen doors in the Juxian Hall are the hall's treasures, featuring themes of historical stories and auspicious patterns, with highly intricate openwork layers. Looking up at the beams, carvings can be seen everywhere.
Ceramic and Stucco Roof Decorations
The ceramic figures and stucco decorations on the roof ridges are the most flamboyant part of Lingnan architecture, featuring numerous figures in vivid colors, creating a strong contrast with the plain walls.
Craft Exhibition Hall
The hall also displays Guangdong folk crafts: Cantonese porcelain, ivory carving, Cantonese embroidery, and Shiwan ceramic sculptures, allowing visitors to understand craftsmanship while appreciating the architecture.
