High-Speed Rail Ticket Snatching and Seat Selection: The Full 12306 Process

Accounts and Verification

12306 (official Chinese railway) supports registration with passport, Taiwan Compatriot Permit, and Hong Kong and Macau Resident Travel Permit. Overseas phone numbers can receive verification codes. After registration, you need to complete the "identity verification" before purchasing tickets—online facial verification often fails, in which case you need to go to the station ticket window, bring your original documents, and it takes about 5 minutes. Once verified, it is valid for a long time, so it is recommended to complete this at the airport or high-speed rail station on the day of arrival.

Ticket Purchase and Standby

  • Advance Booking Period: Usually 15 days, some routes 30 days. Release times vary by station, mostly on the hour or half-hour between 8:00—18:00.
  • Standby: This is 12306's most useful function. When a train is sold out, submit a standby order and pay, and if someone cancels, the system automatically assigns the ticket to you. On popular routes, the success rate can reach 60—70%.
  • Standby Tips: Standby for 2—3 train services at the same time; accept "no seat" and then upgrade to a seat on the train; for long-distance trips, if tickets are unavailable, buy a "segment ticket" to get on the train first and then upgrade.

Seat Classes

  • Business Seat: 1 2 layout, can fully recline, has a private table and service. Beijing-Shanghai in 4.5 hours costs about 1700 RMB, suitable for seniors and business travelers.
  • First Class Seat: 2 2 layout, wide seats with footrests. 40—60% more expensive than second class, value is noticeable for trips over 4 hours.
  • Second Class Seat: 3 2 layout, most common. Perfectly adequate for trips under 3 hours.
  • Sleeper: Only available on night trains. Soft sleeper four-person compartment with a door, more comfortable than flying for seniors on overnight interprovincial trips.

Seat Selection

12306 allows choosing "window/aisle." Try to buy all seats in one order; the system will prioritize arranging adjacent seats.

  • Scenery: Beijing-Zhangjiakou Line (Beijing—Zhangjiakou) window side near the Great Wall, Chengdu-Kunming Line, Qinghai-Tibet Line (Xining—Lhasa) right side have the best views.
  • Quiet: Avoid areas near carriage connections and restrooms; first-class carriages are generally much quieter.
  • With Children: Choose the first row at the ends of the carriage for more space, but note that these are "priority seats."

On the Day of Travel

  • Foreign documents use the manual channel; it is recommended to arrive at the station 40 minutes in advance (at major stations such as Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao, security checks can take up to 20 minutes).
  • Luggage weight limit: adults 20 kg, the sum of length, width, and height not exceeding 160 cm; rod-shaped items not exceeding 130 cm.
  • Food on the train can be ordered for delivery to your seat (the 12306 App has "Food & Specialties"), just enter your train number and seat number.
  • Ticket changes and refunds: More than 8 days before departure, refunds are free; more than 48 hours, 5%; 24–48 hours, 10%; within 24 hours, 20%.

If Tickets Are Unavailable

During peak times (Spring Festival travel, National Day, May Day), tickets for Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Guangzhou, and Shanghai-Kunming routes are hard to get. Alternatives: Airplane (buy 30–60 days in advance, prices often lower than high-speed business class), overnight sleeper buses (only as a last resort), or adjusting the departure date (pressure is much lower one or two days before or after the holiday).
