Pingjiang Road Travel Guide

Pingjiang River · Stone Pavement · Pingtan

Pingjiang Road is the most well-preserved historic street in Suzhou's old city. It stretches along the Pingjiang River, with the layout of the river, road, bridges, and residences basically consistent with the Song Dynasty's "Pingjiang Map." Compared to Shantang Street, it is quieter and more reflective of everyday life.

Pingjiang Road is located in the northeast of Suzhou's ancient city, stretching about 1.6 kilometers from north to south, parallel to the Pingjiang River. Its layout can be found on the Southern Song Dynasty map "Pingjiang Tu" and is a prime example of Suzhou's "dual grid pattern" with both waterways and roads adjacent to each other.

Main Highlights

Rivers and Bridges

On one side of the river are residential houses with white walls and black tiles, while the other side has shops. There are more than a dozen stone bridges over the river, each with a name, and the bridgeheads are great spots for photos. It looks best in the early morning when the river is misty.

Pingtan and Small Teahouses

There are Pingtan theaters on the street, with performances in the afternoon and evening. Even if you don’t understand the Wu dialect singing, it's worth sitting for a while. There are also some small teahouses and bookstores.

Old Residences and Alleys

Walking from the main street into side alleys (such as Dingxiang Alley and Zhongzhangjia Alley), you can see real-life scenes, and there will be fewer tourists all of a sudden.

Suggested Stay

  • 1.5 hours: Walk through the main street once.
  • Half a day: Include Pingtan, Ouyuan Garden, and surrounding alleys.

Local Tips

  • The main street gets crowded on holidays, while early morning offers a completely different experience.
  • It’s convenient to visit on the same day as the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Suzhou Museum.
