The Dujiangyan Irrigation System, built by Li Bing and his son in the 3rd century BC, still irrigates the Chengdu Plain today. It is the oldest existing dam-free water diversion project in the world that is still in use. The three components—Yuzui, Feishayan, and Baopingkou—are easy to understand once you see them on site.

Key Highlights

Yuzui Diversion Dam

It divides the Min River into the inner and outer rivers, and the principle of splitting the water in a four-to-six ratio is based on this shape.

Feishayan and Baopingkou

They are key for flood discharge, sediment removal, and controlling the water intake. Baopingkou is a mountain pass carved by humans.

Erwang Temple and Anlan Suspension Bridge

The temple commemorating Li Bing and his son is perched on Yulei Mountain, and the suspension bridge crossing the river provides the most picturesque view.

Qingcheng Mountain

About 15 kilometers from Dujiangyan, it is a famous Taoist mountain with temples in the front and natural scenery in the back.

Suggested Stay and Route

  • Suggested stay: 1 day.
  • Half a day for Dujiangyan, adding a day for Qingcheng Mountain will make the visit more relaxed.
  • Connecting with other cities of similar themes makes the route more efficient. You can refer to the "Extendable Routes" below.

Best Season

How to Get There and Intercity Transport

There is an intercity railway from Chengdu to Dujiangyan, about 30 minutes; continue in the same direction to Qingcheng Mountain.
