Destination Details
Kaoyuan Temple in Chaozhou is located in the center of the ancient city of Chaozhou. It was originally built in the 26th year of the Tang Kaiyuan period (738 AD) and has been reconstructed multiple times over the generations. It holds a high position in Lingnan Buddhism and is also the most complete group of ancient buildings in the old city, forming a pedestrian area together with the nearby Ji Lüe Huang Gong Ancestral Hall and Paifang Street.
Main Highlights
Halls and Stone Sutra Pillars
The main axis consists of the Vajra Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mahavira Hall, and the Sutra Storage Building. The Mahavira Hall is spacious, with dougong brackets and beam structures retaining many early construction techniques. Several Tang Dynasty stone sutra pillars stand in front of the hall and in the courtyard, inscribed with texts such as the "Cundi Mantra." Although the inscriptions are weathered, they remain the oldest physical objects in the temple.
Chaoshan Craftsmanship
The glazed tile mosaics on the roof ridges are a hallmark of Chaoshan temple architecture: colorful ceramic pieces are cut and assembled into figures, flowers, and dragons and phoenixes. Resistant to sun and rain, the seams between individual tiles can be observed up close. The gilded paintings on the wooden structures and the stone-carved railings are equally intricate.
